Abstract

1333364 Polypropiolactones SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 12 Jan 1972 [14 Jan 1971] 1501/72 Addition to 1257971 Heading C3R [Also in Division C2] Polylactones are obtained by polymerization of a propiolactone which has been stabilized by incorporating therein a small quantity of sulphur dioxide according to Specification 1,257,971, characterized in that the propiolactone has been previously purified by contacting it with a permanganate. Before polymerization the sulphur dioxide content of the lactone is preferably reduced to less than 0À0025% by wt., e.g. by passage of dry nitrogen, and the polymerization is advantageously effected in the absence of water. In examples pivalolactone is polymerized.
