Abstract
1,162,274. Treating and reconstituting tobacco. PHILIP MORRIS Inc. 5 June, 1967 [16 June, 1966], No. 25896/67. Heading A2C. A tobacco product for making into sheet material comprises 5-90% of a fibrous tobacco material containing tobacco pectins having substantially no calcium or magnesium cross-links; a calcium compound to provide 2-3% of calcium; a potassium compound to provide 0.19-5.0% of potassium; 5-20% of malic acid or a salt thereof; 0.75-10.0% of citric acid or salt thereof; 1-6% of a humectant and 5-20% of a sugar; all percentages being by weight. Tobacco stems, fines or scraps are washed with water and then treated with a solution having a pH of 0.5-3.0, e.g. of recirculating wash water through an acidic-type ion exchange resin or by adding hydrochloric acid, to remove the calcium and magnesium cross-links from its pectin content. The treated tobacco is then pressed, dried and ground to form a pulp, the pulp admixed with water and adjusted to a pH of 5-10, the other ingredients are then added and the resultant slurry cast into a sheet. Optional additional ingredients include phosphates, magnesium compounds, and nicotine or its salts. Suitable humectants include glycerine, triethylene glycol, butylene glycol, and propylene glycol; suitable sugars include invert sugar, dextrose, fructose, and sucrose.
