Abstract

1445111 Tobacco substitutes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 31 May 1974 [9 July 1973] 32504/73 Heading A2C [Also in Division C3] A smoking mixture comprises a tobacco substitute, i.e. any solid substance which though not of tobacco origin may be smoked in the same way, in admixture with a solid residue obtained by removal of nicotine from Nicotiana Rustica by treatment with alkali followed by steam distillation or leaching with water, or with a solvent extract of such a residue. Preferably the tobacco substitute is a thermally degraded carbohydrate produced in a catalysed degredation process at above 100‹C until the weight reduction of the starting material is at least 10%. In examples a slurry is made from (a) glyceral, water, sodium carboxy methyl cellulose and (b) MgCO 3 , CaCO 3 , bentonite and α-cellulose to which had been added 2.15 parts of a powdered residue obtained by steaming Nicotiana Rustica, distilled water and lime. The slurry was cast into a film which was subsequently shredded and blended with Virginian tobacco to make cigarettes.
