878,779. Making cigarette mouthpieces. MULLER, P. A. Aug. 8, 1958 [Aug. 10, 1957], No. 25606/58. Class 130. A web 22, Fig. 4, of loose synthetic fibres, e.g. viscose fibres alone or mixed with cotton or cellulose acetate fibres, is passed from a web forming machine 21 through embossing rollers 24, 25 which compress the web at spaced positions whereby contacting fibres at these positions are caused to adhere together mechanically solely by the pressure, the resulting web being gathered together laterally and formed into rod shape to produce filter plugs in which the fibres are bonded together at numerous points 14, Fig. 1. The embossing roller 25, which may be heated to facilitate the bonding of the fibres, is provided with a pattern of raised ribs 25, various suitable patterns being described. The resultant embossed web, or two or more superposed webs, are passed through further ribbed rollers 49, Fig. 12b, which form longitudinal channels in the web and produce further points of adhesion between contacting fibres and also cause the superposed webs to adhere together, the resultant web passing to a rod forming mechanism 52. The viscose fibres have high water-absorbing and swelling properties and are preferably mixed with cotton or cellulose acetate fibres having lower absorptive properties.
