Abstract

1,218,641. Tampons. MO OCH DOMSJO A.B. 3 Jan., 1968 [3 Jan., 1967; 15 Aug., 1967], No. 428/68. Heading ASR. A tampon comprises an absorbent layer 12 consisting only of cellulose pulp fibres that are less than 5 mm in length, enclosed within a wrapper 13 of high wet strength fibrous material. The cellulose pulp fibres may be obtained (by mechanical disintegration) as "fluff" fibres from cellulose pulp which is itself derived from various exemplified wood materials, and the distribution of the ranges of fibre length in the layer 12 are exemplified. The wrapper layer may comprise a non-woven porous fabric of a viscose or acetate rayon fibre, or of other exemplified synthetic fibres, or of suitably impregnated natural fibres, and the fibres of the fabric may be bonded together by an exemplified synthetic resin material (and optionally with heating and softening treatment). The wrapper layer may also comprise a laminate of an inner ply of cellulose pulp tissue material secured to an outer ply of a non-woven polyethylene fibre material. An exemplified adhesive may secure together the overlapping edges of the wrapper layer about the tampon. The tampon may be circular, elliptical, square, rectangular, or polygonal in cross-section. As shown, the tampons are formed in apparatus which includes an endless belt 10 of stainless steel wire mesh material, the belt being used to move the cellulose pulp fibres 12 from a supply line 7 onto the wrapper layer 13 and between guide belts 21, 22 which slightly compress the wrapper and pulp layers. The apparatus also includes a disintegrator I of a known exemplified type which provides the fibres of less than 5 mm in length from pulp sheets, a suction device 11 which holds the fibres onto the porous belt 10, and a shaping device 28 which folds the composite fibre and wrapper material into a continuous cylindrical member. An adhesive applying roller 32 and heated rollers 35, 36 then seal together the overlapping longitudinal edges of the wrapper layer, and the cylindrical member is then cut by a device 37 into individual tampons suitable for dental or catamenial use.
