Abstract

Filter plates are made from intermingled animal, vegetable, mineral or artificial fibres partially or wholly wetted with an aqueous dispersion of a bonding agent such as rubber, bitumen, bitumen-rubber mixture, nitro-cellulose, acetyl cellulose, viscose, or synthetic resins such as phenol-formaldehyde resin, by compressing the mass almost to the greatest possible extent before the bonding agent loses its plastic nature. Suitable fibres are hair, jute, hemp, sizal, fibris, glass wool, asbestos, viscose. The fibres may be preliminarily shaped before application of the dispersions by diffusing or spraying after which the water is partially or wholly removed before pressing in moulds or between cylinders, which may also shape the product by providing ribs, cavities or corrugations. When rubber is used as a bonding agent, vulcanization is effected after pressing and vulcanite or coriaceous rubber may be formed. A laminated product may be formed by superposing a plurality of thin layers. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of bonding agents in solution or in a molten state. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
