Abstract

A web of paper, cellulose wool and/or cellulose fleece, or of superimposed elementary webs thereof, for cigarette filters is treated by rolling in two passes that produce without substantial transverse web stretching successively finer axial crepe, embossing or grooving effects and may be followed by a pass between smooth-surfaced rools. Two or more like or unlike webs may be combined after like or unlike passes and subjected to one or more further passes. The or each web may be, before or between passes, steamed, sprayed with water or solutions adapted to increase adsorption, or treated with tobacco aromata. The rolls may be heated and the web passed therethrough under adjustable tension which may be sufficient to stretch it longitudinally. A previously transversely creped web may be used. Passes may be between non-contacting rolls of similar profile with rounded edges and each roll may have intersecting surface patterns. The treated web is folded and compacted into a round or oval cross-section rod from which filters are cut.
