Class 130 At least the greater part of a filter for cigars, cigarettes, tobacco pipes or cigar or cigarette holders is formed by an assembly of layers each comprising a multiplicity of distinct and contiguous superposed elementary leaves of fibrous material having over their whole surface an 'interrupted structure so as taken singly to offer no appreciable obstacle to the passage of tobacco smoke through them, the layers being so arranged that in use practically all the tobacco smoke is forced to pass through the filter along irregular sinuous paths and to traverse completely one or more layers from one side to the other thereof. As applied to a cigarette filter-tip a plurality of cellulose wadding discs each formed of a multiplicity of elementary leaves may be arranged in a cigarette end normal to the cigarette axis and, if desired, between compressed cotton-wool wads; or a strip 6 of cellulose wadding composed of, say, six elementary leaves may be longitudinally folded as shown and cut where indicated by the chain-dotted lines, the strips thus formed being each rolled up lengthwise and inserted into a cigarette end with the fold 10 adjacent the tobacco; if desired, only those cuts shown as passing through one strip thickness may be made, each final strip then having two folds 10. Alternatively, the filter may be rolled up from a strip which is not folded or has a central fold or folds. Filters according to the invention may have layers interleaved by cotton wool.
