Abstract

491,591. Cigarette-making machines. FILTER TIPS, Ltd., and EDWARDS, W. F. M. Feb. 3, 1937, No. 3254. Addition to 457,033. [Class 130] In the manufacture of filter-tip cigarettes as described in the parent Specification, slight axial pressure is applied to the lengths of cigarette rod and filter tips or mouthpieces, comprising each assemblage, throughout the rolling operation. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, uniting bands 4 are carried over a suction table by a perforated conveyer 1 on which the assemblage, comprising a doublelength tip 7 and two cigarette portions 8, 8a, is deposited by a drum. During the rolling operation converging belts 2, 2a press the outer parts 8, 8a of the assemblage towards one another. The belts 2, 2a are driven through universal joints so that their angle of convergence may be adjusted. In the construction shown in Fig. 8, the assemblage is deposited on a single flexible belt 9 of greater width than the assemblage. During the rolling operation portions of the belt pass over longitudinally extending grooves 10, 10a of gradually increasing depth and /or width in a suction table 11, and the belt 9 is contracted laterally to press the outer parts 8, 8a of the assemblage towards the stub 7. The uniting bands may be applied to the assemblages before they contact with the conveyer.
