486,419. Cigarette - making and like machines. DEARSLEY, G., SHACKLETON, J., and INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY CO., Ltd. Aug. 28, 1936, No. 8705/38. Divided out of 481,796. [Class 130] A continuous tobacco rod is formed by feeding tobacco into a passage or conduit and progressively reducing the speed of travel of the tobacco therein so that the rod is gradually built up by the contraction of the tobacco stream. The tobacco is showered on a horizontal feed band bv which it is delivered into a conduit 29 formed between curved elements 32, 33 arranged eccentrically to the axis of rotation of discs 30, 31, bv which the tobacco is fed through the conduit at a gradually decreasing speed, and delivered to a cigarette-paper web 35 on the garniture tape 34. The speed of the band feeding the tobacco between the elements 32, 33 is greater than that of the tape 34 and may be up to 50 per cent greater. In a modification, the discs 30, 31 are replaced by a hollow conical element having a helical or volute slot through which the tobacco is fed by inner and outer rotary members conforming to the surfaces of the conical element.
