In a machine for attaching uniting bands to assemblies of a mouthpiece with one or two cigarettes, the transverse speed of each assembly is reduced while the uniting band is being rolled thereabout and then increased back to initial value, the speed changes being effected by two oppositely moving surfaces each moving at constant speed and engaging diametrically opposite sides of each assembly, the speeds of the two surfaces being predetermined to set the time of rolling and the speed of transfer through the rolling operation. Uniting cigarettes and mouthpieces.-Uniting band material 10 (Fig. 1) is coated with adhesive by a wheel 24 and fed on to a suction drum 36 at a speed lower than the peripheral speed of the drum 36 so causing lengths of uniting band material 42 to separate after cutting by a device 40. The leading cut edge of each length 42 extends across a series of suction holes 46 which also retain a cigarette and mouthpiece assembly fed from a suction assembly drum 74. As each assembly approaches a rolling drum 108, which drum has a slightly lower peripheral speed than the drum 36, it is spun while passing slowly between the two drums 36 and 108 and then picked up again by the suction holes 46. More than one assembly may be rolled at a time. Either of the drums 36 and 108 may be heated and both are provided with scrapers 110. The rolled and united assembly 112 is transferred to a suction drum 114, aligned, the double length cut in half by a knife 120, and the cut lengths discharged down a shoot on to a collecting belt. Shallow grooves may be provided parallel to the axis of and in line with the holes 46 of the drum 36, or both drums 36 and 108 may have such grooves. In another embodiment the drum 108 is replaced by a drum 104 (Fig. 5) with flutes 142, both drums rotating at the same peripheral speed but in opposite directions. Each assembly is rolled without progressing through these drums and then falls into one of the flutes 142 in which it is carried through a cutting device 150. Assembling cigarettes and mouthpieces.-Sextuple lengths of mouthpiece material 50 are fed to a drum 58 on which double mouthpiece lengths 86 are severed and transferred by a suction drum 70 to the assembly drum 74 between pairs of spaced cut lengths of cigarette rod 82, these cigarette lengths 82 having been fed by a conveyer tape 84 and deflected laterally by blades 76 and held thereto by suction. The double mouthpiece 86 and the cigarette rods 82 are pushed into abutting contact on the assembly drum 74 by a pin 88. The pin 88 is pushed inwards against a spring 90 by a swash plate surface 96 which is rotatably mounted on a bearing 98 carried by an adjustable screw 100.
