Abstract

Cigarettes, of the type in which a stub portion and a cigarette portion are secured together and abut endwise, are made by aligning stub and cigarette portions whose aggregate length is greater than the required length of the finished product, pressing the cigarette and stub portions together endwise to reduce their overall length to the desired length, and securing the cigarette and stub portions together by wrapping material. This may be effected whilst the cigarette and stub are moving axially, for instance by the means described in Specification 430,742, the endwise pressure being effected by the fingers 39. Alternatively, the apparatus described in Specification 392,266 may be used, the endwise pressure being effected by the spring-actuated plugs 50. The term "stub" is defined as in Specification 430,742. Specification 430,786 also is referred to in the first Provisional Specification.
