Double mouthpiece cigarettes each containing both a formed plug 8 at the mouth end and a cotton wool or other soft wad 1a adjacent the plug have the wads cut from a length of material 1, Fig. 1, as by scissors 2, pressed into a shaping device 6 and thereafter inserted into the paper tubes 7 of the respective cigarettes. In Fig. 1 tubes 7 having previously inserted plugs 8 are brought in turn on a flat or revolving disc conveyer 9 into line with a reciprocating shaping device 6 having a spoon portion 4 which enters an aligned tube 7 after a reciprocating hollow pusher 3 has forced a wad 1a into the device 6, the wad being then blown along the tube into firm contact with the corresponding plug 8 by compressed air passed through the pusher 3. In Fig. 9 wads 16 cut by scissors 12 from a length of material 1 forwarded by a roller 11 are pressed by a pusher 13 into a circumferentially spaced series of shaping holes 14 in an intermittently rotated disc 15, and when the holes during rotation coincide with similarly spaced holes in a further intermittently rotated disc 17 and containing plugs 20 inserted by a pusher 19, the plugs and wads are ejected together by a pusher 21 into a reciprocating spoon 22 from which they are transferred in known manner, with the aid of a stripper claw or wire (not shown) passing through a slot in the spoon 22, into cigarette tubes 23 successively located on the spoon. An oscillatory pricker 27 may pierce each wad in turn and drive it partly into the mating plug. Alternatively, the wad may be caused to adhere to the plug by wetting the adjacent plug face, during transit on the disc 17, with glue applied by a rotating star wheel co-acting with a transfer wheel running in a reservoir.
