[Class 130] Filter tips are inserted in cigarettes or the like, i.e. cigarette paper tubes or mouthpieces, by bringing the cigarette or the like into contact with an abutment and inserting the tip by a device which moves in two distinct stages, in the first of which it inserts the tip flush with the end of the cigarette or the like, and in the second of which it pushes the cigarette or the like out of contact with the abutment. Cigarettes 1 from which part of the tobacco has been extracted, preferably as described in Specification 411,424, are carried by an intermittently rotatable drum 2 into alignment with a spring- pressed rod 3 which, when released by a camactuated lever 5, presses the cigarette against a shoulder 6a on a spoon 6. The cigarette is clamped on the spoon by one or more camactuated grippers 8<a>, and a filter tip 12 is inserted from a filter-tip forming unit 7 or a drum by a plunger 11 operated by a cam 13 and lever 13a. The cam 13 is stepped so that the plunger moves in two stages, the tip being first inserted in the spoon until it is flush with the end of the cigarette, and then, after the rod 3 and the grippers 8<a> have been withdrawn, the plunger ejects the filter tip from the spoon and carries the cigarette off the spoon. To ensure the removal of the cigarette, the plunger 11 is provided with a tongue 11<a> which enters a slot 6b in the spoon.
