439,201. Cigarette-maldng machines. WIX, A., 338, Goswell Road, and EDWARDS, W. F. M., 1, Kempsford Gardens, Earl's Court, both in London. June 1, 1934, No. 16430. [Class 130] A filter tip or mouthpiece is inserted in the end of a cigarette in a space from which has been removed a portion of tobacco less in length than the filter tip so that when the tip is pressed home the tobacco is compressed. An intermittently movable conveyer 2 moves the cigarettes 1 in succession into alignment with a tobacco extracting device 9. Each cigarette is held on the conveyer by a gripper 11 and it is prevented from moving axially by a stop 8 whilst a cutter, rotatably mounted on a plunger 10, makes an incision around the tobacco filling adjacent the wall of the paper tube, and, on withdrawal, extracts a part of the tobacco filling as a core. The cutter may be formed by a tube having a toothed cutting edge, or by a tube with two oppositely disposed prongs provided at their extremities with cutting edges, or as described in Specification 423,740. The tip is inserted by a plunger either through the tubular cutter or through a spoon and the cigarette may be held on the spoon during insertion of the tip by one or more gripper pads and the outer end of the tobacco filling may be supported by a stop. The forward movement of the plunger may be effected in two stages as described in Specification 436,535.
