Abstract
427,628. Cigarette-making machines. WIX, A., 338, Goswell Road, and EDWARDS, W. F. M., 1, Kempsford Gardens, Earl's Court, both in London. Sept. 27, 1933, No. 26638. [Class 130] In a continuous-rod machine having means for removing sections of the tobacco filling and replacing the same by filter tips, the section of tobacco to be removed is first separated from the paper strip 1 on which it rests, for example by inserting a blade 5 between them, the section of tobacco being then severed and removed. The paper strip 1, which is shaped to trough form to receive the tobacco 2, is preferably first flattened out as shown in the Figure, and may be held in this position by the action of suction through holes 8<a>, a flat blade 5 carried by a lever 5<c> on a carriage 10 being then inserted laterally. The carriage 10, which is moved laterally by a cam 10<b> and lever 10<d> and a spring 10<g>, is mounted on another carriage 11 which moves longitudinally with the cigarette rod. As the carriage 11 moves forward, the blade 5 is raised by the action of a cam 5b and spring 5<d> so as to grip the section of tobacco against the underside of an arm 10<a> on the carriage 10. Rotary cutters 16 then sever the tobacco section, after which the carriage 10 returns and the tobacco section is stripped off by a member 18. A plunger 17, actuated by a lever 17<a> and cam 17<c>, then ejects a filter tip 24 from a chamber 10<h> into the gap formed in the tobacco rod. The filter tips are pushed laterally from an intermittently rotating drum 20 into the chamber 10<h>. Instead of flattening out the paper strip 1, a curved separating member may be used for insertion between the paper and tobacco, the latter being severed by vertically reciprocating knives.
