[Class 130.] In an apparatus for producing filter tips for cigarettes from a continuous core or filling and inserting the tips into cigarettepaper tubes or mouthpieces, the core or filling is fed intermittently to cut-off and inserting means by means of a longitudinally reciprocating gripper and a stationary gripper through which the core extends ; in its forward movement the reciprocating gripper engages the core and carries it forward, while in its rearward movement the gripper releases the core, which is held by the stationary gripper to prevent its backward movement. The core or filling is preferably formed of composite material consisting of strips of creped, embossed, or corrugated paper with or without intervening layers of an absorbent or filtering material. The forming means preferably comprises sets of intermeshing blades 1, 2, from which the folded strip passes between circumferentially grooved rollers 5 as described in Specification 398,557. From the rollers 5 the core or filling is threaded through the reciprocating gripper, which comprises a tapered thimble 13 and upper and lower jaws 9, 9<a> carried by a member 10 reciprocated in longitudinal guides in side plates 11 by a cam 14 driven through gear wheels 15, 16 from a shaft 17. The lower jaw 9 is movable vertically in a slot 10<b> and is normally held by springs 10<g> out of contact with the core or filling. The stationary gripper comprises a pair of jaws 12, 12<a> located in a slotted part of a crosspiece 11<b>, the lower jaws 12<a>, 9 being alternately raised to grip the core or filler, which is released by the jaw 12<a> while being gripped and fed by the jaw 9, and is gripped by the jaw 12<a> during the intervals between feeding movements. These movements of the jaws 9, 12<a> are effected by a member 19 pivoted in blocks 19<a> slidable in slots in the walls 11 and actuated through a lever 21 by a cam 22 on the shaft 17. After the forward movement of the feed device, the length of filling projecting through the aperture 11<g> in the cover plate 11<e>, into the spoon 24 is cut off by a rotary-disc cutter 25. A cigarette-paper tube is fed on to the spoon from the opposite direction and is severed by a reciprocated shear device 26. The spoon 24 is carried by an arm 24b on a member 24<c> sliding on spindles 27, 28 and reciprocated by a cam on the shaft 17. On the rearward movement of the spoon, the cigarette paper tube with its filter tip is removed from the spoon by a spring-controlled lever projecting into a longitudinal slot in the spoon. The cigarette paper tubes are discharged laterally to a chute 35 by means of a rotary drum 33 having a knurled surface and carried by a spindle 33b mounted on an eccentrically adjustable sleeve 33<c>. The drum co-operates with an angularly adjustable cover plate 34, which can be swung outwards by a handle 34f and maintained both in the closed and the open position by a spring 36. The positive discharge of the tubes from the spoon 24 may be ensured by a pusher member 37 actuated by a cam 41 on a shaft 42.
