[Class 130] A cigarette-making appliance comprises a'longitudinally divided tubular mould for the tobacco, the sections 25, 26 of the mould having end members 30, 40 at opposite ends with longitudinally movable plungers 32, 42 for compressing the tobacco in the mould. As shown, the plungers are normally moved outwards by springs 35, 47 surrounding their stems, which terminate in press-buttons 33, 43 projecting from heads 27, 46 on the mould sections. The button 43 has a chisel-shaped head 44 for opening cigarette-paper tubes and the head 40 bears against a bushing 41 grooved to form a dovetail joint with the projection 40 on the section 25. In operation, the section 26 is placed in a trough member 53 supported by a base 50 and is filled with tobacco. The section 25 is assembled by inserting its tip within the bore of the head 27 as in Fig. 21, and any tobacco protruding between the edges of the sections is removed by sliding a cutter C over the assembled former, the plungers 32, 42 being pressed endwise to compress the tobacco. A cigarette-paper tube is then placed over the former and the sections of the former removed, leaving a completed cigarette. When used for filling cigarette-paper tubes fitted with a cardboard tip or filter tip, the plunger 32 is fitted with an extension 65 provided with a bushing or distance piece 68, Fig. 21. For making cigarettes from a sheet of cigarette paper, a celluloid member 72, Fig. 16, is placed over the closed former and a cigarette paper is wrapped around and its edge moistened by means of a pipe cleaner inserted in the bore of the detached member 65.
