Abstract
394,933. Catamenial appliances; absorbent bandages; severing-devices. ROSENFELDER, H., 2, Arkwright Road, Hampstead, and ST. ANDREW MILLS, Ltd., 34, St. Andrew Road, Walthamstow, both in London. March 4, 1933, No. 6627. [Class 81 (ii).] An apparatus for the manufacture of sanitary towels and like absorbent bandages which consist of an absorbent filling arranged within a tubular cover, is characterized by a hollow mandrel 8 arranged between and held by conveyer bands 3, 5, 7, and formed with a part spherical head 8<1> constituting an abutment preventing forward movement of the mandrel. A knitted or gauze tube 10 is drawn over the mandrel from spool 9 by means of the conveyer bands, and encloses the filling 12 introduced into the open end of the mandrel. The completed towel is cut by severing means 13, a portion of the cover being left empty at either end. The severing means may consist of two blades 13 hinged behind a diaphragm 14, and actuated through links 16 connected to a hinged lever 17, 19, Fig. 3. The shears may be pedal operated, but hand operation is preferred. The introduction of the pieces 12 into the mandrel may be effected by hand, and the tube pulled by hand thereover from the accumulated pile held up by resilient checking arms 11, Fig. 1. For automatically introducing the filling pieces, there is provided a supply box 28, Fig. 11, into which are periodically fed from conveyer 31 the filling pieces 12. The bottom of the box 28 is formed of two slides which, through cams and rocking levers, are periodically opened, thereby depositing the filling piece into a feeding drawer 22. After a towel has been severed, this drawer is moved forward by a lever 23, actuated by cam 24, and carries with it the slide 25. At the extremity of the forward travel thereof, a stop 27 engages the rocking arm 26 connected to the slide, retaining it while the drawer 22 and arm 23 return. The filling 12 is thereby deposited in a recess 21 in the bottom wall of the mandrel directly on to the tubular cover 10, which, after withdrawal of the stop 27 and consequent return of the slide 25, is moved forward by the conveyer bands to enclose the filling. The towel is severed by shears 13 which, with all of the other operation parts, are suitably synchronized.
