[Class 130.] A method of inserting a filter plug in a cigarette-paper tube consists in wrapping a plug of filter material in an unsealed wrapper, temporarily holding the wrapper closed, inserting the wrapped plug in the end of the cigarette tube, and releasing the plug wrapper. The plug may be of cotton-wool prepared as described in Specification 396,862. In the mechanism shown, a rod 14 of filter material is covered with a wrapping strip 13 by means of an endless belt 10 and a folding device 15 similar to those of a continuous-rod cigarettemaking machine. The overlapping edges of the wrapping strip are held by a presser 26 carried by a spring arm 27. The wrapped rod passes through a guide tube 30 into the end of a cigarette tube 31 on a rotary carrier 16, and a filter plug is severed from the rod by a cutter disc 28 on a swinging arm. A plunger 19 on a slider 25 pushes each of the tubes in turn on the guide tube 30, and the filled tubes are withdrawn by an arm 18 on a bracket 20, 21 pivoted at 22 on the slider. In a modification, the filter material is fed to the wrapping mechanism in the form of a number of strands or threads passing through a perforated guide plate and converging to a guide tube leading to the wrapping device.
