[Class 130.] A filter tip for cigarettes consists of a length of strip material folded upon itself in substantially U-formation, as in Fig. 4, and consolidated to a more or less circular cross-section, as in Fig. 5. The strip may consist of a single layer of thick material, or of a number of layers of material such as crepe paper, with or without intervening layers of filtering or absorbent material. The material to be folded is positioned over a channel or trough 4, Figs. 1 and 3, into which the material is depressed by a vertically movable blade 5 on an arm 5a fixed to a spindle 5b, which is rocked by a cam 27 acting upon a lever 5c fixed on the spindle 5b. The folded material is consolidated by forcing it, by means of a plunger 6 having a slot 6a for the blade 5, through a flared circular bore 7 into a spoon for insertion into a cigarette paper tube or mouthpiece. The plunger 6 is carried by a member 6b fixed on sliding rods 6c, 6d actuated by a cam 32 by means of a rod 31 and a lever 29 engaging an extension of the rod 6c. The strip material is fed intermittently over a table 15 to the trough 4 by rollers comprising segmental discs 9, 9a and 10, 10a, the discs 9a, 10a being angularly adjustable on the discs 9, 10 to adjust the effective length of the projecting segments. The material is positioned over the trough by a stop 3, lateral guides 15a and a bridge 15b, and a length is cut off by a rotarydisc cutter 2 on a shaft 16 driven through sprocket and spur gearing 21-25. The shaft 16 is carried by arms 17 pivoted to a bracket 18, one arm 17 having an extension 17a co-operating with a cam 20 to raise and lower the cutter. In a modification, the tips are cut from a continuous or rod-like filling formed by feeding layers of material such as crepe paper, creped or corrugated longitudinally, over a channel or trough of gradually increasing depth or curvature, a longitudinal folding blade being arranged above the trough. The folded filling may be consolidated by passing it into a flared tube or through an assembly of forming discs or rollers, and is then cut into lengths.
