Abstract

311,827. Aivaz, B. Nov. 23, 1927. Feeding and winding webs. - In the manufacture of spirally wound wads, and particularly filter wads for cigarettes, cigars, cigarette holders, tobacco pipes, &c., by means of a nest of parallel rollers rotated in unison, the leading part of a strip of material is formed into a compact nucleus or core upon which the remainder of the strip is wound by contact with the rollers. The material used may consist of two or more layers of specially prepared crepe, crinkled, or corrugated unabsorbent paper and an intervening layer or layers of loosely incorporated matted, or unwoven cellulose fibres, as described in Specification 311,831, [Class 130, Tobacco], and the supply spool may be produced as described in Specification 311,832. As shown in Figs. 1, 3, 9, and 12, five rollers b<1> are employed, the strip material m<1> being admitted between a pair of rollers and impinging upon the. rear roller. The rear roller and the two lower rollers are mounted in a stationary frame b<3> secured to a part c<1> fixed on the table c, and the two upper rollers are mounted in a frame b<4> pivoted to the frame b<3> and lifted by mean of a handle b<6> or lever and cam mechanism b<5>, d<4> to admit the strip material. A fixed guide b<14> extends over the front lower roller, and stops b<23> engaging grooves in the rollers b<1> prevent the strip material from passing out between the rollers. The rollers are geared together by intermediate pinions and driven from a pinion b<12> on a countershaft b<13> carrying a pinion b<22> gearing with a pinion e<1> on a sleeve c, which is rotated intermittently bv automatic clutch mechanism. A clutch tooth e<2> on the end of the sleeve is engaged periodically by a toothed member e<3> slidable on and rotated by a shaft e<2> by a lever f<2> actuated by a face cam f<1> on from a countershaft f, which is driven from the main countershaft d<3> through bevel gearing d<5>, g<1> and a shaft g. The clutch member e<3> is moved into and out of engagement with the tooth e<2> by a lever f<2> actuated by a face cam f<1> on the shaft f. When the clutch is disengaged, the sleeve e is held against rotation by a stop f<3> and a spring catch f<4> on the lever f<2>. The strip material m<1> is supplied from a spool m on a carrier i, and the tension is controlled by an adjustable spring i<8> carrying a brake block i<9>, or the spool may be positively driven by a sprocket gear and a friction wheel. The strip m<1> passes over a guide roller i<18> and between guides l<1>, l<4> to a guiding plate l between lateral guide bars l<7>, l<8>, one of which is adjustable. Feed rollers j, j' are driven from the countershaft g and the upper roller g is carried by a pivoted frame j<4> which can be raised by a handle j<20> and a cam j<22> to interrupt the feed. The upper roller is also fitted with an adjustable cam, bearing on a cylindrical surface on the lower roller and holding the rollers apart during a part of each revolution. The cutting mechanism comprises a fixed blade k<1> and a pivoted blade k<2> carried by an axially adjustable bar k' and actuated by a cam h<11> on the main shaft d. The forward end of the strip is guided from the cutters to the fixed guide 14 and the nest of rollers by an adjustable guide l<14> and an upper guide l<18>. The finished wad is ejected axially by a plunger h extending through the sleeve e and the shaft e<4> and actuated by means of a bell-crank lever having a pin-andslot connection with a lever co-operating with a cam on the shaft d. The wad is transferred into an enclosing tube or wrapper, cut by shears a<2> from a continuous tube a<1>, by a sleeve o on a slide o<1> reciprocated by means of a crank disc on a shaft parallel to the main shaft d. The crank pin is connected by a rod to an adjustable pivot on a lever o<6>, the ends of which is connected by a rod o<7> to the slide o<1>. The enclosing tubes or wrappers are moved into alignment with the sleeve o by jaws p, p<1> carried by cam-actuated arms on a shaft p<2> and a concentric sleeve p<3>. The tubes provided with wads are discharged by oscilleting fingers r<2> upon a receiving table q, Fig. 12, and pass between it drum r and a curved wall q<2> by which they are rolled to expand the wad in the tube. In a modification of the rolling mechanism, Fig. 14, four rollers b<1> are employed and the strip n<1> is initially wound in a spiral between a fixed guide b<27> and a pivoted guide b<28> acted upon by a spring b<32>. The guide b<28> is initially in the position shown and moves to the left as the winding proceeds.
