Abstract
527,945. Winding webs. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Aktiebolaget Siefvert & Fornander). April 24. 1939. No. 12268. [Class 100 (i)] In a machine for winding wall paper or other material into rolls of predetermined size, a coupling for starting and stopping the web feeding device, a knife for severing the web, and mechanism for delivering the rolls, are actuated in timed relation by cams on a control shaft normally driven by the driving mechanism of the machine but having an additional driving mechanism by which a higher speed can be imparted to the shaft when a fault is observed in the web so that the knife and delivery mechanism can be quickly operated to produce a smaller roll containing the faulty portion of the web. The web 2, Fig. 1, passes round guide rollers 3 ... 6, tensioning roller 7 and feed roller 8 and past a cutter 16 to the space between winding rollers 22, 23, 24, 25 which are geared together by intermediate gears 28, 29, 30 one of which is driven through a slipping clutch by a chain 33, shaft 34, and gear 36 from a gear 35, Figs. 1 and 6, fast with a gear 13 which is loose upon a shaft 12 and driven continuously by a'motor 14. The rollers 24, 25 are mounted on pivoted arms 26, 27 geared together for equal simultaneous movement and the arm 27 is connected by linkage to a bell-crank lever 32 actuated by a cam on the control shaft 21 to swing the rollers 24, 25 apart to allow the finished roll to fall into a receptacle 60. Prior to this a second cam on the shaft 21 actuates the cutter 16 through linkage 20, 18. The feed roller 8 is driven by chain and sprocket gear 10 from the shaft 12 to which the gear 13 is periodically connected by a clutch 47, 48, Figs. 5, 6 controlled by cams on the shaft 21. For this purpose, the movable clutch part 48 is engaged by one end of a lever 50 the other end of which is connected by a spring 52 to a slide plate 53 reciprocated by a grooved cam 55 on the shaft 21. The extreme end of the lever 50 is normally engaged on one side or the other to hold the clutch engaged or disengaged by means of a pawl 58, the movement of the slide 53 compressing or extending the spring 52. The pawl 58 is actuated by a cam 56 on the shaft 21, this cam having two projections, one releasing the pawl to allow the spring 52 to engage the clutch and the other to allow the spring to open the clutch. Between the times of opening and closing the clutch the shaft 21 acts by its cams to sever the web and deliver the roll. The shaft 21 is driven from the shaft 34 by gearing 37, 38, 39 and a gear 40 loose on the shaft 21 and driving it by a one way clutch. The shaft 21 is also connected by a chain 43 to a sprocket wheel 44 loose on a shaft 45 which, by means of a one way clutch and gearing may be quickly turned by the depression of a pedal 46 so as to rapidly rotate the shaft 21 to bring the knife 16 into operation. This operation is performed when the operator, observing the web at the area between the guide rollers 4, 6 notices imperfections in the web. The roll containing the faulty portion is delivered into a separate receptacle. This is effected by sliding a guide tray 62 into position beneath the rollers 24, 25 and this guide tray is actuated on depressing the pedal 46 by means of an arm 65 on the shaft 45 connected by a cord 64 to the tray 62. Instead of the pedal and one way clutches, the shaft 21 may be driven by a two speed gear from the driving motor 14.
