[Class 130] To compact the ends of a cigarette, relative lengthwise movement is produced between the cigarette and a compacting-member having a compacting-surface of a diameter slightly less than that of a cigarette, to cause the compacting-surface to enter the ends of the cigarette. Cigarettes delivered from a continuous-rod machine are gripped and spaced by forwarding-belts 34, 35 moving at a greater speed than that of the cigarette rod, and are displaced laterally into longitudinally-extending grooves 23<a> in a rotating drum 23 by a pusher 31 which is given an orbital movement by means of crank pins 26a, 28<a> carried on shafts 26, 28. To secure accurate alignment of the cigarettes on the drum, a plate 40 slidably mounted on a frame 35<a> is reciprocated by a crank 41 to engage the ends of the cigarettes and push them into contact with a flange 23<c> on the drum. During this movement, convex bosses 23d on the plate 40 or the flange 23<c> enter the ends of the cigarettes to compact the tobacco. The grooves 23a are provided with ports 23b communicating with a suction chamber 37 in a stationary block 38, and the chamber extends from a point adjacent the belts 34, 35 to a point at which cigarettes are removed by delivery belts 39 running in grooves in the drum.
