Abstract
488,029. Cigarette-making and like machines. MOLINS, D. W., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Dec. 29, 1936, No. 35613. [Class 130] In feeding tobacco to mechanism for forming a continuous tobacco filler, a stream of tobacco is formed by positioning tobacco at the rear end of a stream of tobacco movable in one general direction, separating strips of tobacco from the leading end of the stream, and directing the separate strips towards the said mechanism. In the apparatus shown in the Figure, tobacco from the carded roller of a feed hopper is showered by a picker roller upon a smooth high-speed roller 15 and passes through a confining passage formed by the surface of the roller and a curved plate 16 pivoted at 17 and connected to an eccentric strap 18, by which it is moved towards and away from the surface of the roller. The stream of tobacco built up in this confining passage is impeded by a plate 49 carried by an arm 50 pivoted at 51 and actuated by a cam 53 to move the plate into and out of the path of the stream. Strips of tobacco are separated from the stream by a blade 55, which may have a serrated edge and is clamped to a carrier 56 actuated by a pair of crank-pins 57, 58 on shafts 59, 60. The separated strips fall into a receptacle formed by projections 36 on a roller 35 and are deposited on a band 32 travelling in the bottom of a trough 33 forming part of mechanism for forming a continuous tobacco filler. A guide 37 surrounds the projections 36 and the roller 35 is rotated intermittently by means of a Maltese - cross drive comprising rollers 40 motmted on a pinion 39 and engaging non- radial slots 41 in a disc on the shaft 34. In an alternative construction, Figs. 1 to 3 (not shown), the means for severing tobacco strips from the stream and conveying them to the band 32 is that described in Specification 488,027. Specification 459,607, [Group VIII], also is referred to in the Complete Specification and Specification 441,402 in the Provisional Specification.
