[Class 130] In a cigarette-making or other machine in which cut tobacco is fed by a carded endless conveyer or roller 4, surplus tobacco is separated from the conveyer or roller by a blade 6 adjacent to the carding of the conveyer and having an uneven or toothed tobaccoengaging edge which is opposed to the direction of movement of the conveyer and is given a relative movement in a direction transverse to the direction of movement of the conveyer. As shown, tobacco in a hopper 1 is conveyed to the roller 4 by a smooth roller 2 having retractable pins 3. The blade 6 has square teeth 9, Fig. 5, chamfered at the edges and bent as shown by the chain line 600, and is reciprocated endwise upon a support 7 by means shown in Fig. 3. The blade is clamped to flexible straps 104 fixed at 38 to levers 39 pivoted at 40 and connected by tensioned straps 43, each lever 39 being oscillated from an eccentric 49 through a rod 47 universally jointed to an arm 46 on the lever. Surplus tobacco separated by the blade 6 is guided by the member 8, on which slides a tamper 13. In front of the blade 6 is a presser element 10 of ovate or circular section, carried by pivoted arms 11 and resting freely on the tobacco, and a trimming roller 17 having inclined pins 18 and rotating in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1. , The tobacco on the roller 4 may be removed by a picker roller 50 and thrown by a vaned winnowing roller 52 on to a carded roller 54, from which it is removed by a picker roller 56 and discharged through a chute 140 on to a band 150 or a web of cigarette paper. The various rollers &c. are driven from a motor by chain, belt &c. gearing described in the Specification. In a modification, Fig. 4, the tobacco-engaging edge 9 is integral with the guide 8, which is secured to an angle piece 113 reciprocated in the same manner as the blade 6, Fig. 3. In a further modification, Fig. 6, a toothed roller 210 in front of the blade 6 rotates clockwise at a slower peripheral speed than that of the roller 4. Tobacco is removed from the teeth of the roller 210 by a raking device comprising rakes 180 moving in the path 190, 192, 194, 196. The rakes 180 are pivoted at 183 on an arm 181 pivoted at 182, but are frictionally held against angular movement on the arm 181. A lever 184 on the mounting for the rakes is connected to a chain 185 anchored at 186, and a cam 187 connected to the rakes is adapted to engage a fixed stop 1 S9 when the rakes reach the point 195 in their path. A raking device as described in Specification 441,433 may be provided instead of that shown in Fig. 6. Specification 520,223 also is referred to. One of the Provisional Specifications states that a pressing device &c. as described in Specification 385,210 may be used for dealing with a tobacco roll formed above the carded conveyer.
