[Class 130] In tobacco-feeding mechanism for continuousrod machines, in which a measured layer or " carpet " of tobacco is formed on a rotary carded drum 5 or equivalent feeding surface receiving tobacco from a hopper or supply, a number of carpet controlling means are provided in series, each comprising refusing means such as drums 7, 17 and tamping or compacting means 8, 18, so that the tobacco fed past the first refusing means may be subject to a subsequent removing action. As shown, the tamping means 8 comprises weights independently mounted on curved arms 9 supported on rollers 10 to oscillate about the axis of the drum 7. The arms 9 are simultaneously lifted and dropped by levers 11, each coupled by a chain 12 to an arm 9, the levers being mounted on a rock-shaft 13 coupled by a rod 14 and arm 15 to a crank disc 16. The second tamper 18 is a single bar carried by arms 19 pivoted about the axis of the drum 17, the bar 18 being connected by chains 20 to extensions 11a of the end levers 11. The bar 18 may be replaced by a series of short bars each carried by an independently pivoted arm. The tampers 8, 18 may be interconnected so as to balance one another, and oscillating rakes may be provided to spread any roll of tobacco that may form between the drums 7, 17. Tobacco, short tobacco or cut stems may be fed on to the carpet or into the space between the drums 7, 17.
