Abstract

884,194. Severing and wrapping absorbent fibrous batts; cutting apparatus. JOA, C. G. Feb. 13, 1958 [June 6, 1957], No. 4773/58. Classes 31 (1) and 96. [Also in Group XVII] An absorbent fibrous web 17, Fig. 2, is formed as strips, as disclosed in Specifications 884,191, 884,192 and 884,193, and passed to a conveyer 27, beneath a compacting roll 30; an air-hood 32 carried by chains 79 is preferably pressed down on to the web, and an air blast therethrough displaces portions of the web which are withdrawn by suction and returned for re-use. Adhesive-coated paper strips 24, 23 are thereafter supplied above and below the severed web portions or batts, the lower strip 23 being folded about the batt and the upper strip 24 with the aid of ploughs 46. The ensleeved batts then pass beneath rotating dies 48 which press together the upper and lower wrapping between successive batts. Serrated, coacting knife-blades 55, 56, Figs. 2 and 7, then sever the paper to form separately wrapped pads, e.g. for use in packing furniture. The cutting- action, which is between a stationary knife 55 and a rotating knife 56 occurs while the pad 22 is supported on a spring-biased apron 54, and leaves fibre-ends 71 projecting from the serrated, cut edges. The stationary knife 55 is slotted and may be cleared by a reciprocating push-off bar 65. Specification 884,201 also is referred to.
