884,191. Forming absorbent fibrous webs &c. JOA, C. J. Feb. 13, 1958, No. 4770/58. Class 96. [Also in Group IX] In the production of webs of loosely assembled wood pulp, or re - worked paper fibres, &c., for use in thermal insulation, furniture wrapping pads, sanitary napkins, &c., the fibrous material, e.g. from a hammer mill, is supplied pneumatically through a pipe 11 and separate 12 to a chamber 15 where it accumulates on the upper run of a slowly moving conveyer 16, which is supported by parallel bars 17, a paddle-wheel 18 rotating e.g. at 40 r.p.m. limiting the thickness of fibre picked up, with the aid of a suction box 25, on a vertical conveyer 20, the fibres &c. at the surface of the web thus formed being rearranged, and the web made more uniform by a high-speed paddle 35 which effects mechanical brushing or wiping and/or air-turbulence. Optionally combing teeth may be provided. The web may be laminated with paper plies, e.g. using flour- and-water adhesive paste, e.g. two such webs may be adhered with a paper ply at each outer face and one in the middle. To form narrower webs, a strip of the vertical conveyer 20 may be masked by tape or by a baffle-plate. Specification 813,722 is referred to.
