Abstract

487,161. Slag wool. STEVENS, A. H. (Johns-Manville Corporation) Dec. 15, 1936, No. 34433. [Glass 22] [Also in Groups IX and VIII] A batt, mat, or felt of mineral wool fibres comprises fibres of mineral wool lying predominantly in directions generally parallel to the face of the felt and interlocked individually therein and results from felting fibres predominantly in individualized form upon a gas permeable member, e.g. 13, under the influence of suction, from a suspension of the fibres in a gaseous medium moving in a predominantly horizontal direction to allow shot and heavier particles to settle away from the suspension of fibres passing to the gas permeable member. The fibres are blasted from a molten stream 9 by a high velocity gaseous jet 10 and a mixed stream 11 of gas, fibres and unnberized material is projected into the chamber 12, the lighter fibres being collected on the gas permeable member 13 under the influence of suction through a hood 17. The member 13 comprises an endless screen driven by sprockets 14, 15, 16. Shot and heavy fibrous clusters settle to the bottom of the chamber 12 and secondary streams of air, or other gas, may be admitted through ports 18 to support the lighter fibres while permitting the settlement of heavier materials. The batt or felt is removed at 19 and wound on a drum 20. A roller 27 serves to seal the chamber 12 and lightly compress the felt. An adhesive such as rubber latex, resin, asphalt or an oxidizing oil may be sprayed on at 23 and a composite felt formed of several such layers. Binding materials such as rubber, oxidizing oils, resins or linseed oil may also be applied to the fibres.
