Abstract

1427505 Resin-fibre composites; web formation MATERIAL SYSTEMS CORP 3 Sept 1974 [17 Sept 1973 9 Aug 1974] 38490/74 Headings DIN and D1R A rigid fibre reinforced resin sheet contains inorganic nonflammable filler particles in excess of 20% by weight. A mixture of polyester resin and filler is spread from puddling box 28 to form a layer on an impervious polyester carrier film 30 or endless belt. A multifilament glass jute or sisal roving 40 is cut into “ to 4 inch lengths by rotating knife 46 and the cut lengths separated into individual fibres by beater bar 48 and by the turbulence of a stream of air which ascends duct 38 from manifold 50. A randomly orientated fibrous layer is thus deposited upon the resin/filler layer. If desired additional, coarser filler may be added from hopper 52 and additional resin/ filler mixture from puddling box 60, the additional resin/filler being applied to an upper covering 58 (e.g. a polyester film) which is placed on top of the composite. The composite is kneaded during an undulating path between rollers 68 or by passage between successive sets of upper and lower rollers, each exerting a different pressure upon the composite and rotating at a slower linear speed than that of the composite. The composite is passed through a first oven 70 so that vulatiles in the resin migrate to the upper surface, forming bubbles under cover 58. These are removed by the action of oppositely inclined blades or squeegees 74 which may also form corrugations or channels in the sheet. The sheet is then cured in oven 76 and the carrier films 30, 58 are removed. The surfaces of the composite are rich in resin due to resin migration. The composite may contain 1-5% by weight of methyl methacrylate, acetone or styrene as resin dilutant. The filler added to tank 10 comprises 500 to 1000 mesh alumina or calcium carbonate and preferably comprises 50% by weight of the material in the tank. Coarser (e.g. 200 mesh) sand may be supplied from hopper 52. The glass fibres comprise 5 to 40% by weight of the composite.
