Abstract

1331482 Fibrous webs GLASWERK SCHULLER GmbH 2 Oct 1970 [8 Oct 1969] 47051/70 Heading D2A [Also in Division B1] In the production of a web of staple glass fibres a liquid suspension 4 of the fibres is fed from a vessel 3 through a breast box 7 to a web former 13, the fibres which are carried in a current of gas, e.g. air, being fed to the vessel through a duct 1, and the liquid, e.g. water, being fed to the vessel through a pipe 8 in the form of a stream which intersects the current of gas and has a speed which is greater than the current of gas and is such that the fibres are straightened and carried below the surface 5 of the suspension in the vessel. The web former 13 comprises an endless pervious conveyor band extending over suction boxes 14. The suspension in the vessel 3 may be subject to mixing by stirrers or pumps, and a curtain of water 11 overflowing from a tank 10 keeps the wall of the vessel free of fibres. The curtain of water 11 may be varied in thickness to maintain the fibre to liquid ratio of the suspension, and liquid which may be from the boxes 14 or other fibrous material, e.g. inorganic and/or organic fibres, may be fed to the vessel through a pipe 12. Further streams of liquid may be provided, e.g. through a pipe 8a, and further duots carrying fibres of different kinds suspended in air may feed into the vessel 3, Fig. 2 (not shown), and liquid under pressure may be fed to the vessel below the surface 5 of the suspension to stir the surface.
