Abstract

729,678. Filter paper. PAPIERFABRIK FLEISCHER GES. Jan. 29, 1953 [Aug. 6, 1952], No. 2600/53. Class 96. [Also in Group VI] Filter rods such as used for tobacco smoke filters are formed by continuously cutting material in sheet form, for example tissue paper, into narrow longitudinal strips and passing it through two successive pairs of rollers, the first pair of which may effect the cutting, the rates of rotation of the said pairs of rollers being such that the rate of travel of the material through the second pair of rollers is less than that through the first pair to cause the narrow strips to buckle up and form a fleece which, in the same operational sequence, is formed into rod shape. Two sheets of paper from webs 1, 3 are formed into a doublelayer sheet 8 which is cut into narrow strips by rotary disc cutters 11, 12 and a third sheet 9 from a web 5 is cut by cutters 15, 16. The cut sheets from the two pairs of cutters pass through pairs of rollers 19, 20 and 21, 22 which run more slowly than the cutters and cause the narrow paper strips to curl up and form continuous fleeces 23, 25 of paper wool, which fleeces combine at 26 to form a single fleece which is passed through a trough 27 and shaped into a continuous rod 32 by rollers 30, 31. The rod passes through further shaping rollers 35, 36 to a wrapping mechanism in which it is wrapped in paper, the wrapped rod being later cut into filter tips suitable for cigarettes. The cutting rollers 11, 12, 15, 16 each comprises a number of parallel rotary cutting discs, the discs of one cutter e.g. 11 being situated between the discs of its associated cutter 12, and stripping devices 13, 14, 17, 18 are associated with each pair of cutters to prevent paper being carried around with the cutters. Either the fleece or the completed filter rod may be sprayed with chemicals which have the effect of absorbing the substances which it is desired to remove from tobacco smoke. Alternatively the sheet material or the fleece can be dyed, charged with perfume, or flavoured.
