Pleating.-In a composite material for the manufacture of -coiled or pleated filter wads for cigarettes, cigars, cigarette holders, tobacco pipes, &c. comprising layers of creped, corrugated, or other unabsorbent paper and an intervening layer or layers of absorbent material, such as cellulose fibres, paper wadding, &c., the unabsorbent paper is of such character or is so reinforced as to avoid extension of the composite material by the tension imposed during the formation of supply spools and the production of wads. In one form, Fig. 1, the composite material consists of layers a of unabsorbent creped or corrugated paper and layers b of absorbent material, the paper a being comparatively stiff. The layer b may be creped or corrugated and the unabsorbent layer may in that case be uncreped. In modifications. any suitable creped or corrugated paper is used in conjunction with reinforcing means to prevent stretching. As shown in Fig. 8, a strip a of creped or corrugated paper is united by adhesive with a flat paper ribbon a<1> on one or both sides. Two layers a, Fig. 9, of creped or corrugated paper may be united by adhesive at their edges, the corrugations preferably being diagonally disposed as shown. In further forms, narrow strips of paper a<2>, Fig. 12, or threads a<3>, Fig. 17, are attached near the edges of the corrugated paper a and a layer of absorbent material is applied upon the side remote from the reinforcing means, or an absorbent layer is applied upon both sides of a layer of comparatively stiff creped or corrugated paper. Fig. 17 shows an apparatus for making a composite material comprising corrugated unabsorbent material a and absorbent material b, reinforced by threads a<3> and a paper strip b<1>. The material a is drawn from a reel a<4> and over a roller g, spots of adhesive being applied by pointed discs g<1> and the absorbent material being drawn from a reel b<2> and being attached by passing between rollers h. The composite strip passes between corrugating rollers i, i<1>, preferably heated, and over a roller j, when the paper strip b<1> is attached by the threads a<3>, which are drawn from reels k and passed over a roller l for applying glue.
