Abstract
488,318. Cigarette-making and like machines. RUAU, F. F., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. April 16, 1937, No. 10916. [Class 130] A stream of uncompressed or substantially uncompressed tobacco is fed by a band 11 over a bridge 13 on to a wrapper web 14, which is folded into U -form as it passes, on a band 16, through a converging passage 17. The passage 17 is formed in blocks 22, 23 which are provided with slots 20, 21 to shroud the edges of the web and with wedge-shaped members 28, 29 to close the space between the converging side-walls 18, 19 of the passage ; one or more rotatable wheels 27 or an endless belt are inclined towards the bottom of the passage to compress the tobacco. The band 16 passes through a passage 24 having parallel sides in which the edges of the wrapper pass through guides while the tobacco is further compressed by a rotatable wheel 36 which may have a curved rim or by a stationary surface. The under surface of the band 16 may be unsupported or may be supported by a bar in the bottom of the passage. The wheels 27, 36 may be swung about pivots 32, 38 to permit access to the passages 17, 24. The upper surface of the tobacco is guided by a stationary member 30 before it is engaged by the wheel 27.
