Abstract

1387404 Cigarette filter rod manufacture MOLINS Ltd 11 April 1972 [15 April 1971] 9482/71 Heading A2C In a continuous cigarette filter rod making machine of the kind in which a tow 18 or web of crimped filaments is fed onto a continuous paper wrapper web 16 and is carried through a tongue 15 by means of a garniture tape 13, the tow is compressed between the wrapper 16 and a driven conveyor means, the conveyer means being provided upstream of at least a downstream part 15C of the tongue 15. As shown in Fig. 1, the tow 18 is fed into a bellmouth 15B that leads to an upstream part 15A of the tongue 15. The conveyer means comprises a driven circumferentially grooved wheel 19. In a second embodiment, Fig. 7, the upstream portion 15A, 15B of the tongue 15 is replaced by two wall members (22), 23 between which runs the periphery of the wheel 19. The tow 18 is fed to the tongue 15 via a free running, V-grooved wheel 21. In a third embodiment, Fig. 12, the tow 18 is fed between the nip of a compression wheel 30 and a smaller wheel 36, both wheels 30, 36 having perforated peripheries to part of which suction is applied. In a fourth embodiment, Fig. 19, a perforated band 51 passes around a driven compression wheel 52 and a similar wheel 53. Suction applied to the lower run of the band 51, in conjunction with a cover plate 56, in addition to supporting and transporting the tow 18 also causes it to shrink longitudinally due to air being drawn longitudinally through it in the region of the plate 56. In a modification of this embodiment, the plate 56 is replaced by a suction wheel (57).
