Abstract

1,208,063. Cigar manufacture. MOLINS MACHINE CO. Ltd. and A. J. KEIZER. 14 Jan., 1969 [16 Jan., 1968], No. 2433/68. Heading A2C. Rods of cigar-tobacco are formed by passing a filler consisting of pieces of cigar tobacco lengthwise on a wrapper to a first compression device and then passing the partially compressed filler from this device to a second compression device which device has an entrance wider and higher than the exit of the first device whereby the partially compressed filler can suddenly expand on entering the second compression device. The process may be carried out in an apparatus as shown in Fig. 1 wherein pieces of leaf are carried on the underside of a suction conveyer 1. A tape 4 carries a continuous wrapper web 5 beneath the band 1 and wheel 3 so that the filler is released on to the web 5. The tape 4 runs in a trough (Figs. 2-6, not shown). The filler is then passed beneath the shoe 6 and into a channel, the walls of which, 7, gradually extend downwards towards the trough. The channel becomes progressively narrower, thus partially compressing the filler. This filler is then passed beneath the compression tongue 8. The tongue at its entry is wider and higher than the exit of the channel in shoe 6. In passing from the shoe 6 to beneath the tongue 8, the filler may expand. The web is folded over the compressed filler during the passage of the filler beneath the tongue 8.
