Abstract
1,139,717. Machines for making diapers. G. S. LUNDQUIST. 13 Feb., 1967 [14 Feb., 1966], No. 6723/67. Heading A3V. [Also in Division A5] In a machine for making compresses such as diapers, a strand of cellulose fibres 15 is transferred by a cylindrical drum 5 on to a strip of cellulose wadding 29 folded into channel section by plates 33, whereupon the wadding 29 and fibres 15 thereon together with a moisture pervious wrapping band 34 are compacted by a roll 35, after which the wadding 29 and band 34 are folded by plates 49, Fig. 2, around the fibres 15, longitudinally sealed and transversely cut into suitable lengths. As described, cellulose from a hammer mill (1) (Fig. 1A, not shown) is carried in an air stream through a pipe to the feed drum 5, excess fibres being recirculated to the mill (1) via a pipe 6 and container (7). A vacuum is applied to the interior of the drum 5 via a passage (23) (Fig. 6, not shown) in the drum shaft 8 and a communicating pipe 9, to hold the fibres against the surface of the drum which consists of a perforated metal sheet 10 clamped between end walls (21, 22). Fibres passing through the perforated sheet 10 are recirculated to the mill (1) via the pipe 9 and container (7) from which very small fibre particles are sucked to a storage container (14) for subsequent disposal. The fibres 15 are conveyed between the drum 5 and a tensioned pinch belt 17 and are transferred on to the wadding 29 by blowing air via a passage (24) in the drum shaft 8 through a segment 20 mounted between the end walls (21, 22) within the drum 5, after which the wadding and fibres are fed over the wrapping band 34. After the overlapping portions of the wadding 29 and band 34 have been longitudinally heat sealed together and embossed by a roller (39) (Fig. 1C, not shown), the assembly is transversely cut, sealed and embossed by a roll (44). The individual compresses are finally fed over a conveyer belt (45) and beneath two spaced apart conveyer belts (47).
