Abstract

1340655 Stapling fibres FIBER INDUSTRIES Inc 2 June 1972 [3 June 1971] 25856/72 Heading D1F A "Keith Apparatus" (as described in U.S.A. Patent Specification 3485120) for cutting continuous filamentary tow (64) into staple fibres and wherein flattened tow 64' is fed to a succession of knife edges 28 (28') removably secured to a reel so that the inner layer 64" of successive wrappings of tow extends across and in touch contact with each two adjacent edges 28 and pressure is applied by a roller 42 against the tow causing the edges to cut the inner layer into short lengths, is modified so as to cause one or more streams of gas e.g. air from jet 76 to flow through apertures 74 in a reel mounting member 20 and impinge upon the cut (and crimped) fibres in the proximity of the doffing point of these fibres in order to ensure their prompt removal through a collecting funnel 72.
