Abstract

734,795. Stapling fibres. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 20, 1953 [Dec. 3, 1952], No. 30639/52. Class 120(3). In cutting continuous filaments into short lengths, a tow or bundle is fed in zig-zag folds into the nip formed by the overlap of two circular knife-edged discs which cuts through every cross-member of the folds. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, rolls 1 feed a tow 2 into a flexible tube 3 through which it is passed by a rapid air stream therein : the lower part of the tube 3 is oscillated over the nip of discs 5 and 6 by means of an eccentric drive 1 so that the tow is laid in folds into the nip. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4, tow 10 supplied by rolls 9 is passed through a tube 11 by an air stream entering at 12 : a second air stream from a tube 13 rendered intermittent by a disc 14 impinges on the tow to produce the folds therein. Specification 359,511 is referred to.
