Abstract
553,896. Stapling continuous filaments. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION June 30, 1942, No 8979. Convention date, Oct. 4, 1941. [Class 120 (iii)] Apparatus for cutting continuous filaments into staple fibres comprises a feeding device, a cutting device, and adjustable means for varying the lengths of material extending from the feeding device to the cutting device at successive-instants of cutting so as to vary the lengths of the cut fibre. As shown the constantly rotating feeding device 3 and cutting device 4 are a constant distance apart and the filaments 2 pass from the device 3 through a guide eye to the device 4; the eye 9 is carried by a rod 10 reciprocated in guides 11, 12 by crank mechanism 13 so that the path of the filaments is constantly altered; the crank pin 22 is adjustable in a groove 25 in the crank disc 15. The cutting device may have one or a number of knives 8 and may be rotated at varying constant speeds. In a modification the filaments from the eye 9 are forced through a tube by compressed air from a nozzle at the entrance end of the tube, a rotary disc carrying a number of knives being disposed at the other end of the tube.
