Abstract
770,355. Shearing. GOGAN, J. Jan. 3, 1955, No. 112/55. Class 83 (4). A wire-cutting machine comprises a cutting head 14 having a die member 38 provided with a shearing surface 57, Fig. 5, into which opens a feed passage 46 for the wire 11 to be cut, and a carrier 40 having openings 58<SP>1</SP> in which are disposed cutters 39, the end faces 39a of which are slidable on the shearing surface 57, the carrier being rotatable to move the cutters across the feed passage to shear successive segments of the wire. The cutters are in the form of spring-pressed slidable pins which are freely rotatable in the openings 58<SP>1</SP>. The carrier forms part of a flywheel 63 which is mounted on a spindle 25 rotatable by an electric motor 28. The die member 38, which is detachably secured in a bore 32 of a cover 31, has a grooved bore 43 in which is disposed a removable grooved die stem 42, the grooves 44, 45, Fig. 9, of the bore and die stem co-operating with each other to form feed passages, the wire being fed preferably through the uppermost passage 46a. The feed passages can be used in succession by rotating the die member 38. The wire is withdrawn from a coil 12, Fig. 1, led through a revolvable guide device 77 and a fixed guide tube 79, and fed to the cutter head by means of grooved feed rollers 15, 16 which are driven from an electric motor 75. The feed roller 16 is adjustable relatively to the feed roller 15. In passing to the feed rollers, the wire engages the driving roller 17 of a centrifugal switch 18 which is operable to automatically stop the machine when there is an interruption or decrease in speed in the wire feed, and in passing from the feed rollers to the cutting head the wire traverses the guide channel 19 (not shown) of another automatic control device 20 which is operable to stop the machine if the wire should become kinked. The wire is cut by the shearing action of the peripheral surface 39b, Fig. 9, of the end face 39a of a cutter with the inner end 58a of the feed passage 46a. The cut wire segments are discharged through a funnel 33, Fig. 1, into a removable container 35. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), a plurality of wires are cut simultaneously.
