Abstract

1,085,134. Making cables. E. VORNBAUMEN [trading as E. VORNBAUMEN & CO]. Feb. 17, 1965 [Jan. 28, 1965], No. 11616/67. Divided out of 1,085,133. Heading D1T. A cable is formed by drawing a plurality of strands from a common stationary carrier 1, passing the strands around the carrier through a guide unit rotating about the carrier, the strands being guided separately and individually by the guide unit, and passing the strands to a twisting head rotating at double the speed of the guide unit and thence to a compression die. As shown the guide comprises a flexible shaft 46 having one end secured to the carrier and the other end to the twisting head. The strands pass through openings in bearings 48<SP>a</SP>; <SP>b</SP>; and <SP>c</SP> and discs 47 attached to the spindle. A core wire passes around pulleys 4<SP>b</SP> on carrier supports 2 before reaching shaft 46. In the embodiment of Figures 4 and 5 (not shown) the shaft is replaced by guide members having axial passages for the strands and joined by universal joints, except that the guide member between carrier supports 2 is omitted and that the last guide member need not be joined to the twisting head. Also in this embodiment end discs rotating at the same speed as the twisting head may be positioned on the outside of carrier supports 2 and have guide passages and pulleys to guide the core strand directly to the twisting head and not through the reel carrier 1.
