Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily manufacture a metallic wire core which has spiral grooves wherein optical fibers are contained correctly, by employing a metallic wire with linear grooves. CONSTITUTION:While an assembling machine 11' is at a still, a metallic wire 1' with linear grooves and plural optical fibers 3 are uncoiled from supply drums 9 and 12 respectively and then inserted into an assembling die 15. The die 15 is rotated and the tips of groove position detecting pins 19 are fitted in the linear grooves 2' of the wire 1' to make the positions of the fibers 3 coincident with those of the grooves 2' correctly. Thus, a metallic wire core 4' is formed. Then, the wire core 4' having the plural fibers 3 contained in the respective grooves 2' is passed between press rolls 20 and drawn by drawing caterpillars 13, and after its tip is wound around a drum 14, the caterpillars 13 and drum 14 are rotated around the center axis of the wire core 4' to twist the wire core 4'. Consequently, the linear grooves 2' become spiral grooves 2, so that the fibers 3 are held stably in the spiral grooves 2 of the metallic wire 1 without falling out.
