Abstract

1,085,133. Making cables. E. VORNBAU MEN [trading as E. VORNBAUMEN & CO]. Feb. 17. 1965 [Feb. 18, 1964], No. 6948/65. Headings D1J and D1T. A cable is formed by drawing a plurality of strands from supply reels, twisting the strands temporarily together, untwisting the strands, and subsequently twisting the strands together to form a cable with a twist twice that of the temporarily twisted strands. As shown the supply reels 6 are mounted in a non-rotating carrier 1 and the strands 19 are twisted by being passed around pulleys 4, 4a mounted in rotating supports 2. The strands are passed to a twisting head 7 rotating at twice the speed of supports 2, and then to compression die 8 to form the twisted cable. The stress in the cable may be relieved by temporarily overtwisting the cable by means of grooved roller 9a, rotated through a steplessly variable gearing 10. The twisted cable is either passed via a draw off disc driven through a steplessly variable gearing to a reel without further twisting, or, ss shown, is given two more twists and wound on reel 33 in stationary carrier 101 supported by members 102 rotated at the same speed as carriers 2. A core wire 20 may be fed around pulleys 4b and from the right-hand inner pulley either direct to die 8, or via reels 6 and around pulleys 4, 4a, or may pass straight along the axis of the machine from a reel at one end to the die at the other. Reels 6 may be mounted in carrier 1 as shown, or on a common shaft mounted along the machine axis 5. Alternatively coils of wire may be mounted on shafts extending radially from the machine axis, there being a braked flange at one end and a nut at the other end to cause arms to move outwardly to grip the coil.
