Abstract

359,511. Cutting filaments ; stationary-cutter machines. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd., 22, Hanover Square, London, HALE, F. C. and KIMPTON, W. H., of British Celanese, Spondon, near Derby. June 16 1930, No. 18337. [Class 31 (i).] Cutting apparatus particularly adapted for cutting continuous lengths of artificial filaments into short lengths comprises one or more pairs of overlapping circular knife-edged discs, at least one of each pair being driven at a high speed, together with means for feeding the filaments laterally into the nip of the knives. The knives may be adapted to sever lengths from the ends of filaments led endwise to a pair of knives, or several pairs of knives may be mounted adjacent to one another, and the filaments led laterally into the nip of the knives and severed at several points simultaneously. A number of pairs of circular knife-edged discs 7, 8 are mounted on two parallel driven shafts 5, 6. Bands 10, on which lengths of filaments are placed, pass over supporting rollers 13 and between adjacent pairs of knives. A second set of bands 15 runs between the knives. As the filaments approach the knives they are gripped by the two bands which converge, supporting plates 21, 22, slotted to accommodate the knives being provided for this purpose. Means are provided for adjusting the tension in either set of bands. The cut filaments may be led from the knives by a shoot or by suction, and the uncut lengths may be led to the knives by a hopper having sides consisting of moving bands. In a second form of feeding means described, the filaments are led or blown through an oscillating tube whose mouth moves close to the nip of the knives, so that lengths of filaments are severed each time the tube carries the filaments into the nip of the knives. Specification 357,565, [Group IV], is referred to.
