Abstract
451,987. Cutting threads for staple flbre. GRUNERT, K., 4, Lutherplatz, Zittau, Saxony, Germany. July 10, 1935, Nos. 19735 and 19736. Convention dates, July 10, 1934 and Jan. 12, 1935. [Class 120 (iii)] In a method of cutting a rapidly moving fibrous bundle into staples wherein the bundle is held under tension between two circularly moved pairs of jaws separated by a gap, and is cut in the gap by a rotating knife, the knife rotates in a plane perpendicular to the plane of movement of the pairs of jaws. The fibre bundle 5 is fed upon a band and falls therefrom into the nip of a pair of draw rollers 1, 2 rotating in a vertical plane. The roller 1 may have a grooved surface 3 and the roller 2 a soft rubber covering 4. The two knives 6 are fixed at diametrically opposed points on the fly wheel 7 connected by gears with the draw rollers 1, 2 and rotating in a plane perpendicular to the plane of rotation of the rollers. The wheel 7 is synchronized with the draw rollers 1, 2 so that the knives 6 out the fibre bundle in the gaps 8 between the engaging portions of the draw rollers 1, 2. The apparatus may be driven by an electro-motor or from the transport band feeding the fibres. Two similar apparatuses may be arranged side by side so that by moving a thread guide, the fibre bundle may be lead either to one or the other, thus avoiding loss of time when, e.g. a knife is to be changed.
