Abstract
542,313. Elastic yarns. UNITED STATES RUBBER CO. July 30, 1941, No. 9678. Convention date, Nov. 13, 1940. [Class 120 (iii)] An elastic yarn is made by winding a twisted rubber thread and a textile yarn upon a spool, e.g. side by side, under controlled tension and then withdrawing the thread and yarn end wise from the spool while the latter is rotated so that the thread and yarn are twisted together and the thread partly untwisted, the thread assuming a central position in the finished yarn with the covering yarn lying helically about it; the thread and yarn may be wound on the spool under independently controlled tensions. As shown the rubber thread 11, Fig. 1, is twisted as it is withdrawn from the rapidly rotating spool 10 by driven feed rolls 17 and passes over a traverse guide 23 to the spool 18 where it is wound side by side with a covering yarn 24 drawn from a spool 25; the yarn 24 may be tensioned by a device 26 before passing to the traverse guide 23 and the spool 18 may be carried in pivoted arms 20 and driven by a drum 19 at a constant peripheral speed. The spool 18 is then transferred to a spindle 32, Fig. 2, carrying a flyer 31, the yarn and thread, after being preferably separated and passed through diametrically opposite eyes in the flyer, passing to driven feed rollers 34 by which the twisted elastic yarn 35 is fed to the traverse guide 37 of a drumwinding apparatus where it is wound on a spool 36.
