639,466. Cutting-machines. UNION DES FABRIQUES BELGES DE TEXTILES ARTIFICIELS FABELTA SOC. ANON. Oct. 28, 1946, No. 31967. Convention date, Oct. 26, 1945. [Class 31 (i)] [Also in Group IX] A stapling machine having a pair of slotted feeding members forming a nip for feeding and gripping a bundle of filaments while being cut by a knife which passes into the slots has the cutting edge of the knife formed as a helix whose radius increases at an ever increasing rate from one end of the knife to the other, the axis of the knife being in the longitudinal direction of the filaments so that the cutting edge progressively penetrates into and through the filaments while being displaced longitudinally at the same speed as that of the filaments. A bundle of filaments 6 may be directed by a guide 7<SP>1</SP> between two cylinders 1, 3, both of which are apertured to receive a cutting blade 5 and which are positively driven. Cylinder 3 is spring-pressed against the cylinder 1. After being cut by the blade 5, the stapled fibres are expelled by a jet of water 8. A sharpening device for the blade is rotatable about a shaft 10, so that it may be brought into operative contact with the blade during cutting. In order to permit a slight modification in the length of the stapled fibres, the cylinders 1, 3 may be replaced by cones, the position of the bundle between the cones being determined by the guide 7<SP>1</SP>.
