Abstract

618,673. Batt-forming apparatus. SYLVANIA INDUSTRIAL CORPORATION. April 11, 1945, No. 8950. Convention date, April 14, 1944. [Class 120(i)] [Also in Groups V, VIII and XXIII] Felt products are formed by separately blowing pre-formed potentially adhesive fibres and non-adhesive fibres simultaneously into a confined space to effect mixing thereof, allowing them to settle together in a layer and activating the potentially adhesive fibres (i.e. rendering them tacky) by blowing dry hot air or dry steam through the product. The potentially adhesive fibres may be formed by dispersing a suitably molten or dissolved material through a spray-gun into a chamber 2, Fig. 1, the fibres being conveyed along a duct 5 by a blower 6, into a chamber 4, where they are mixed with non-adhesive fibres introduced through the duct 7. The resul-, tant mixture is sucked on to a perforated band 9 by an exhaust blower 11, and the batt thus formed then passes between rolls 13,14 and is removed for activating. In the form shown in Fig. 2, one type of fibre may be collected on a carding roll 16, removed by a doffer roll 18, and then sucked into a duct 17 leading to a hopper 19, into which the other type of fibres is introduced through a duct 21. A blower 20 then discharges the mixture into the inverted U-shaped duct 22, 23, whence it deposits on a perforated former 24, a suction-pump 25 assisting the action. In Fig. 3, the two types of fibres are introduced into the chamber 4A through ducts 26, 29, and are collected on the perforated band 30, and conveyed between the latter and the band 30A through a chamber in which hot air is introduced through duct 36 and passes through the bath, followed by a chamber in which cold air is used. Rollers 39, 40, may confine or compress the batt. Specification 582,006, [Group VIII], is referred to.
